Good to know
If you'd rather build than buy, start with a 22-gauge copper sheet like this one. It's the same 20 oz. stock we reach for in our own shop. Each full 3 by 8 foot panel (36 by 96 inches) is food-safe, lead-free and a pleasure to work with, whether you're forming a new pot still or repairing an old one.
Is 20 oz. 22-gauge copper sheet good for building a still?
It's what we use ourselves. The weight makes for a sturdy finished vessel, and a full 36 by 96 inch panel gives you plenty of room to lay out your parts.
- Comes rolled: each sheet is rolled to fit an 18 x 18 x 36 inch carton, so leave yourself space to unroll and flatten it.
- Condition: brand new, though it may have a few minor marks from packing and handling.
- Lead-free: heavy, food-safe copper made for still building.

Working copper by hand is part metalwork, part chemistry. Copper reacts with sulfur compounds in vapor, which is why distillers have trusted it for centuries. Build carefully and use food-safe solder. Remember that owning a still is legal in the US, while making spirits requires federal TTB permits. Stills are also used for distilled water, essential oils and fuel alcohol.
