Good to know
A 6 gallon copper still with thumper and worm is where many home distillers find their footing. We shape ours by hand, seam by seam, the way our family has done it for a long while. The boiler is formed from thick, lead-free copper. The thumper sits in line to give your vapor a second pass, and the coiled worm condenser turns that vapor back into liquid. It's forgiving enough for your first run and steady enough for your hundredth.
Is a 6 gallon copper still with thumper and worm a good first still?
Yes. Six gallons is a manageable small-batch size. It's big enough to learn real cuts and small enough to heat gently and watch closely. Treat each run as an experiment: you set the heat, read the vapor and decide where the hearts begin and end. That's the alchemist's part of the job, and the scientist's too.
- Everything in one rig: a hand-formed 6 gallon boiler, a thumper and a worm condenser.
- Why copper matters: copper spreads heat evenly and has long been the traditional metal for stills, valued for cleaner-tasting results.
- Built to last: heavy, lead-free copper with food-safe, tin-soldered seams.
- Many uses: distilled water, essential oils and fuel alcohol. It also handles small-batch whiskey, rum, brandy or moonshine if you hold the federal (TTB) permits needed to make spirits.
Owning a still is legal in the US, but making spirits requires federal permits, so get those in place before you run a mash. Have questions about size, setup or fit for your project? Contact us and we'll talk it through.
